The Migration Westward Continues

The Winter Quarters, NE Temple. It is situated next door to a cemetery where 600 or so Pioneers were buried.

Some of the beautiful windows on the temple.

The sculpture memorializing the anguish of having to bury a childe in the cold, frozen ground at Winter Quarters.

Leaving Nauvoo...

Robin and I had a great time visiting Nauvoo. It was amazing to see what the early Saints did there in the short space of time they actually lived there.

The photo on the left is of the Nauvoo Temple taken from Parley's Street or The Trail of Hope. It would be similar to the view the Saints saw as they left Nauvoo.

Behind the Visitor's Center is a beautiful garden with several statues. This is an example.

A view of the Mississippi looking northward from the bluff where cargo would have been off loaded and transported around the then existing falls.

Our wagon guides. They told some very interesting stories of those who lived there.

This is a view of where the "Sunset on the Mississippi" evening performance used to be done. The river has risen a great deal. Fortunately, the location had been moved earlier to another permantent location at a much higher location.

Depicting Joseph Smith showing Brigham Young that the Saints were, in time, to move westward. This is very close to the above picture. The water had previously been lapping at the base of the statue.

In Nauvoo

Here we are in front of the Nauvoo Temple. It is a very beautiful building.

On the way to Keokuk, Iowa, we had to cross the Mississippi. The river is in flood stage due to heavy rains further upstream. The road had to be raised 6+ feet to get it above the water. The raised road bed is made of crushed gravel. Travel across it is very slow.

Another shot of the river.

On to Carthage ...

Visiting Carthage, Illinois was a very singular experience. We had been listening to some CD's in which the speaker (Truman Madson) was talking about the Prophet Joseph Smith. To learn about him and then visit the location of his death, was insightful. As you may know, he fell from the upper window in this photo.

Here is Ross standing next to the statues of Joseph and Hyram Smith in Carthage.

Trip to Detroit, Cincinnati and beyond...

Robin and I finally were able to make a trip to the middle part of the US. Here we are visiting our friends, Greg and Lynn Robbins. They are currently serving in the Ohio Cincinatti Mission as the Mission President. It was fun to visit with them. They have been out almost a year.

This is a photo of the back yard of the Michigan Detroit Mission Home. It has a huge yard complete with squirrels and birds. A beautiful place.
